Well Brandon and I have officially completed our 1st 10k … and lived to tell about it!
And now I’m here to tell YOU about it … the good, the bad, and the ugly. Because there’s a lot that happens at a race of this size (about 13,000 runners, to be specific!) that people don’t tell you about!
So as I mentioned before, the race was held at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The night before the race, we had to go to “The Nutter Center” to pick up our bibs.
Here’s the first fun fact for ya. At a race this size, you gotta prove that you are who you say you are. Showing your ID is a must to get your bib. Even though Brandon’s bib was in the same folder as my bib because we paid together, I could not pick his up … I had to wait for him to get there.
Another fun fact? Traffic is a nightmare. It took close to an hour to get into the parking lot and another hour to get back out of the parking lot both the night before the race and the day of the race. So if you’re participating in a race like this, be sure to give yourself plenty of time!!
But eventually, we got our bib numbers …
… and some other free stuff!!
Here’s a cool thing about big races … they have expos with tons of booths, all related to running. There were all kinds of running shoes, running clothes, workout equipment, etc.
I was immediately attracted to one booth in particular … the “Sweaty Bands” booth. And if you come back tomorrow, you can have the opportunity to be a part of my first ever giveaway, thanks to the lovely ladies of “Sweaty Bands!”
After picking up our bibs, we got a fast dinner and were in bed at our hotel by 9:30.
The next morning, we were up by 5:30 am. That’s when the title of this particular post flashed into both of our minds.
We also questioned our sanity when we realized it was freezing outside. Sure, the forecasters said that Saturday was going to be 72 degrees and sunny … at noon. But at 6 am, it was a different story!
However, we sucked it up and managed to take a few pictures before headed to the “Start” line!
The race itself was awesome. The 10k runners and the marathon runners all started at 7:30 am, and then the half-marathoners started at 8:30 am. In several locations throughout the run, they had bands playing live music to pump you up. And because the race took place on an Air Force base, they had several planes do flyovers during the race.
I felt great for almost the whole run. Brandon and I took 20-30 second walk breaks after each mile, until the last couple of miles. I think more than anything, it helped me to psychologically push through to the next mile.
Around mile 4, my knee started hurting a little. But thankfully, it kept to a dull ache, rather than a sharp pain. Then in mile 5, we both kicked it into a higher gear to finish the rest of the race!!
And here was our finishing time :
Our average pace was just over 10 minutes per mile. Considering that I’m usually closer to 11:00-11:30 per mile, I was pretty stoked about our time!
By the way, have I mentioned yet that Brandon could run way faster than me if he chose to? Instead, he chooses to stay with me and encourage me throughout the run. Some days, I don’t think I’d be able to finish without him there!!
AND did you happen to notice my sah-weet medal???
OK, so everyone who participated got a medal. But people … you don’t understand. This is the first medal that I’ve EVER gotten for doing anything athletic. So can you blame me for being just a little excited?
(Evidently being excited = channeling John Travolta circa “Saturday Night Fever.” )
So despite the cold weather and the crazy traffic, it was all worth it in the end.
I got to share another exciting life experience with Brandon, I got to run on an Air Force base …
… and I got a cute new accessory. Win-win-win, in my book.
Question for ya …
If you’ve done any races in the past, what are some of your best (and worst!) memories from those races??
Any tips you want to share about participating in big races?
What did everyone do this past weekend???
And don’t forget to come back tomorrow, so that you can be entered in my first ever giveaway!!
