Who signed us up for this anyways?

Well Brandon and I have officially completed our 1st 10k … and lived to tell about it! Winking smile

And now I’m here to tell YOU about it … the good, the bad, and the ugly.  Because there’s a lot that happens at a race of this size (about 13,000 runners, to be specific!)  that people don’t tell you about!

So as I mentioned before, the race was held at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base.  The night before the race, we had to go to “The Nutter Center” to pick up our bibs.

Here’s the first fun fact for ya.  At a race this size, you gotta prove that you are who you say you are.  Showing your ID is a must to get your bib.  Even though Brandon’s bib was in the same folder as my bib because we paid together, I could not pick his up … I had to wait for him to get there.

Another fun fact?  Traffic is a nightmare.  It took close to an hour to get into the parking lot and another hour to get back out of the parking lot both the night before the race and the day of the race.  So if you’re participating in a race like this, be sure to give yourself plenty of time!! Smile

But eventually, we got our bib numbers …

… and some other free stuff!! Thumbs up

Here’s a cool thing about big races … they have expos with tons of booths, all related to running.  There were all kinds of running shoes, running clothes, workout equipment, etc.

I was immediately attracted to one booth in particular … the “Sweaty Bands” booth.  And if you come back tomorrow, you can have the opportunity to be a part of my first ever giveaway, thanks to the lovely ladies of “Sweaty Bands!” Smile

After picking up our bibs, we got a fast dinner and were in bed at our hotel by 9:30.

The next morning, we were up by 5:30 am.  That’s when the title of this particular post flashed into both of our minds. Winking smile

We also questioned our sanity when we realized it was freezing outside. Sure, the forecasters said that Saturday was going to be 72 degrees and sunny … at noon.  But at 6 am, it was a different story!

However, we sucked it up and managed to take a few pictures before headed to the “Start” line!

The race itself was awesome.  The 10k runners and the marathon runners all started at 7:30 am, and then the half-marathoners started at 8:30 am.  In several locations throughout the run, they had bands playing live music to pump you up.  And because the race took place on an Air Force base, they had several planes do flyovers during the race.

I felt great for almost the whole run.  Brandon and I took 20-30 second walk breaks after each mile, until the last couple of miles.  I think more than anything, it helped me to psychologically push through to the next mile. Winking smile

Around mile 4, my knee started hurting a little.  But thankfully, it kept to a dull ache, rather than a sharp pain.  Then in mile 5, we both kicked it into a higher gear to finish the rest of the race!! Open-mouthed smile

And here was our finishing time :

Our average pace was just over 10 minutes per mile.  Considering that I’m usually closer to 11:00-11:30 per mile, I was pretty stoked about our time!

By the way, have I mentioned yet that Brandon could run way faster than me if he chose to?  Instead, he chooses to stay with me and encourage me throughout the run.  Some days, I don’t think I’d be able to finish without him there!!

AND did you happen to notice my sah-weet medal???

OK, so everyone who participated got a medal.  But people … you don’t understand.  This is the first medal that I’ve EVER gotten for doing anything athletic.  So can you blame me for being just a little excited?

(Evidently being excited = channeling John Travolta circa “Saturday Night Fever.” Who me?)

So despite the cold weather and the crazy traffic, it was all worth it in the end.

I got to share another exciting life experience with Brandon, I got to run on an Air Force base …

… and I got a cute new accessory.  Win-win-win, in my book. Winking smile

Question for ya …

If you’ve done any races in the past, what are some of your best (and worst!) memories from those races??

Any tips you want to share about participating in big races?

What did everyone do this past weekend???

And don’t forget to come back tomorrow, so that you can be entered in my first ever giveaway!! Smile

I’ve seen those sweaty bands everywhere and have been wanting to order one for some time now! They’re ADORABLE!

Anyway, great job on the race :D I wish Will and I could run together, but he has really bad problems with his knees. Oh well, maybe I’ll just have to be the 3rd wheel to you & Brandon’s duo team ;)

And since we run at the same pace, you need to let me know when you’re back in Ohio so we can run together!! ;)

Thank you! I attempted and got stressed so I had someone do it for me haha. That would be so fun! And since I probably won’t be back until the weather is crappy and cold- we will have to at least do a meet-up :D .

awww what a fun race! I loved my experience in the rock and roll half in philly last year…it was also my first ever expo and my first ever MEDAL so I completely understand the excitement, I was incredibly geeked out over mine!!

Great job on the race though, what an awesome time! The race that I referred to, they had over 20,000 runners and it was INSANE at the beginning, but the excitement in the audience was palpable and I really enjoyed the experience!

    have a great day!

    • notsodomesticated

Wow, I cannot imagine 20,000 runners all in the same race! At least ours had them all divided into multiple races … half, full, and 10k! That’s a crazy number of runners!

  9. Katie @ Faith & Funfetti

Just found your blog, you are too cute! Congratulations on finishing your first 10k! That’s so exciting!
When I finish my race next month I will DEFINITELY be whipping out the John Travolta dance moves out of sheer excitement, you are not alone.

Oooooo! I forgot the Wright Pat Marathon/Half/10km was last weekend! I might have to run one of those next year. But an hour to get into and out of the parking lot? That seems crazy!

Congrats on a great race! :)

Thanks, Sara! Hopefully they improve the traffic situation next year. It was still worth it, but I was just a tad frustrated with the traffic! ;)

Hey pretty lady … I tell this to all of my “blogspot” friends … there’s a way to make more people have access to commenting on your site. Right now, it won’t let me comment (I just tried). But if you do a little playing around, there are a couple more options that it will give you, so that more people (like me!) can comment! :)

Just FYI, because I bet you’ll get a lot more comments when you are able to change it. Have a great day!
