Weekend in North Carolina

Hi again, friends! Smile

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  I know I sure did.  I spent my weekend in North Carolina, and I loved every second!

005-2000

I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m part of a women’s mentoring group.  In a nutshell, there are six women in my group, and we are mentored by a woman named Regina.  She has been married for 42 years, and she is an amazing woman of faith.  We all committed to a year-long journey together, under Regina’s leadership.  Each month, we read a book on a different topic (e.g., faith, parenting, marriage), memorize Scripture, and commit to daily time in the Word.  Then we meet at the end of each month and share what we learned.

Well for October, instead of our normal meeting, we had a retreat in Highlands, North Carolina.

We stayed in a beautiful home for the weekend …

… and just enjoyed time together, as well as time in prayer and in the Word.

Saturday afternoon, we enjoyed a 2-mile hike up Whiteside Mountain.

The weather was pretty chilly (I believe in the upper 40’s!), but we warmed up quickly once we started moving!

The views were gorgeous, and we had so much fun chatting throughout the entire hike!

After our challenging hike, we felt that we deserved a little sweet treat.

Ice cream in 40 degree weather.  Totally normal, right?

(And in case you’re wondering: vanilla ice cream with Oreo, cheesecake, and marshmallow.  And yes, it rocked.)

The rest of the weekend was spent relaxing in the warm, cozy house.  We pitched in cooking meals, prayed together, giggled over silly stories from early in our marriages, and shared words of encouragement.  It was the perfect weekend with girl friends!

As great as the weekend was, I was ready to get home to my hubby and baby girl on Sunday.  I had missed them so much!  I am incredibly thankful to have a husband who didn’t hesitate to have a quality daddy-daughter weekend, while his wife ran off to another state! Winking smile  He’s definitely a keeper!

Question for ya …

What did you do over the weekend?

Do you enjoy hiking?

Do you eat ice cream during the cooler months?

It’s a year-long program that she does with a group of women. She will be available to us beyond that year, if we want her to be. But the actual program that includes the monthly books and meetings ends in January. :)

North Carolina is so beautiful, especially during the fall. Just look at those leaves, I bet you had some breath-taking views up there. Very surreal. I’m new to your blog, and read today that you read books about parenting and marriage. Well, I am hitting my first year of marriage next month, and would love to hear about any marital books you might be reading. So glad you had a wonderful weekend.

Hi Melissa! Thanks for the comment! And congratulations for hitting your first year of marriage!! :) We just read The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy Keller, and I highly recommend it. Brandon and I would also recommend Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas. The 5 Love Languages is always a good and simple read, but also gives some great advice. I also really liked His Needs, Her Needs: Building an Affair-Proof Marriage. Hope that helps! :)

You recommended all great books I’ve used in mentoring. Loved being with you this weekend.

Oh good, I’m glad you agree with the recommendations! We’ve read several, but those have been our favorites. Thank you for an incredible weekend!! :)

Yay for a weekend to yourself! I can’t wait to do this! As soon as Lucy stops breastfeeding…It seems like you had a wonderful time. I love hiking and your post is having me crave a Saturday outdoors!

One of the other girls that went is still breastfeeding. She just left bottles for her husband to give the baby and pumped several times throughout the weekend. So it is possible, but I know it’s more of an inconvenience! :)
