Happy Monday, everyone! Hope everyone had a great weekend. I know we sure did!
As I had already mentioned, Brandon and I took part in a “Soup Cook-Off” on Saturday. This event has been happening annually for 27 years now! We were excited to take part in the tradition for the first time this year.
However, what we weren’t planning on was the nasty weather.
The event was outside all day .. we got there at 12pm to start setting up, and they didn’t announce the winners until about 7:30pm! So you better believe we bundled up!
This is the whole gang. Me and Brandon, Ali and “her” Brandon, and Lance and Nichole.
I should probably explain the whole concept and the theme, because you’re probably wondering what the guys are wearing!
Each year, there’s a different theme for the event. This year, the theme was “Las Vegas.” So everyone is supposed to decorate their area to go with the theme.
The guys were planning on dressing as dealers, but the weather messed up their outfits just a tad.
Regarding the rules of the cook-off, you have to cook everything for your soup at the event, over an open flame.
Lance was our “captain” for the event. His family has been participating in the cook-off for years, so he knew what he was doing a little more than the rest of us!!
Because of the cold weather and horrible wind, we had to set up a tent to hide under.
And since we were sitting around all day, we also brought plenty of snacks!
Nichole made an awesome chip dip that included beans, salsa, sour cream, cheese, and lettuce. She called it a “Mexican Pigout,” which was an appropriate name, given the fact that we demolished the dip in about 2.1 minutes!!
She also made a dessert using Saltine crackers, chocolate, and peanuts! I’ve never had a dessert with Saltine crackers, but it was pretty delicious!
Since the soup we made was a Mexican soup, I made a Mexican dessert!
These were called “Cinnamon Sopapillas,” and I made them using this mix:
My mom bought it for me at a “Homemade Gourmet” party and it was SO good. I just had to use 2 rolls of croissant dough, a package of cream cheese, and a stick of butter. Everything else was already in the mix. The end result was a combination of buttery croissants and a thick layer of cinnamon-sugar cream cheese. Amazing!
Now I should probably talk about the “star” of the show … the soup!!
We made a Chicken Tortilla Soup. Lance and Nichole had found the recipe online and had actually never made it before, which gave me a heart attack when I first found out!
What was even more nerve-wracking was that our soup was full of cheese and cream. So we had to be very careful not to let it burn!
This meant that there was a lot of stirring involved.
There was also a lot of debate about when to add certain ingredients.
As you can see, the guys took their soup-cooking very seriously.
Of course, there was still plenty of time for fun and games.
P.S. I may be the worst corn hole player ever.
But throughout it all, we kept our eye on the prize.
The end result?
A pretty awesome soup, if you ask me!
We had an opportunity to walk around and try the other soups. There were 15 soups total, and a lot of them were very tasty. But we were still pretty confident that ours could be the winner!
After the soup samples were collected, all we could do was wait for the results.
Right around the time the sun was setting …
… we were finally brought together for the “big announcement!”
They started from the bottom, and announced who came in each place … #15 down to #1. The soups were judged out of a possible 200 points.
We anxiously waited as each soup was called. When they got to the final 5, we were still in the running! They had the final 5 teams face the rest of the audience as they finished counting down.
In the end, we came in 4th place. We were pretty happy to get 4th out of 15 teams, but we were also bummed because 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place all won money. And we were only ONE POINT away from 3rd place and FIVE POINTS away from 1st place!!! Man, that hurt … to get so close, but still be so far.
But that’s OK. It was still an amazing day spent with great people and great food!
