Guest Post: Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle on Vacation.

Today I have a fabulous guest post written by the oh-so sweet, Alyssa!  Alyssa and I have a ton of things in common … we’re both newlyweds, we’re both in education, and we’re BOTH traveling around the Mediterranean right now!

Hello to all of Kristen’s fabulous readers! I’m so honored to be guest posting for her today as she is vacationing around the Mediterranean! I’m Alyssa, and I blog over at Fit and Fun in Third, where I chat about everything including being a newlywed, teaching my 3rd graders, healthy living, and finding the balance between it all! :)

It’s actually pretty funny because as this post is published, I’ll be cruising around the Mediterranean also (unfortunately not on the same cruise as Kristen… we checked!), and I figured I’d talk about healthy living on vacation!

On one hand, I love to exercise, I love to eat my vegetables and spinach smoothies and I feel my best when I’m taking care of my body in these ways.

On the other hand though…. there is nothing quite like drinking a sugary pina colada while sitting in the sand and indulging in home-made coconut ice cream while on vacation.

So how can you find that balance while on vacation?

  • Stay active. While on vacation, it’s easy to park your butt in the beach chair first thing in the morning and not move for the rest of the day, but think about everything you are missing out on if that’s all you do! There are so many fun activities to get involved in! Don’t get me wrong, I have absolutely spent days lounging in the sand sucking down cocktail after cocktail. But do I do that every day? No! I try to take advantage of my surroundings…. snorkeling, swimming, boating, hiking, even building a sandcastle all keep me active while on vacation!
  • Hit the gym. I know, vacation buzz kill. Before you totally write me off, let me assure you that I don’t workout every day, or even every other day while I’m away. But when I’m feeling that vacation sluggishness start to weigh me down, I hit the gym first thing in the morning, get in a good sweaty workout, and feel a thousand times better hitting the beach in my bikini afterwards!
  • Have “treats.” I love frozen cocktails, I love trying new foods, and I love ice cream (and cake, and cookies, and brownies….). Do I love them all at once? No. That’s why they are called treats! I indulge in them all during vacation, but I make sure that I’m not going overboard. If I drink a frozen cocktail (or two), I skip dessert for the night! If I want that coconut ice cream, I skip the sugary drink. Easy peasy!
  • Chill out. It’s vacation. It’s a time to relax, unwind, and treat yourself. I don’t freak out if I indulge in less than healthy eating habits. Sometimes your body needs a break, just like your mind does! Give it that break, give it those treats, and enjoy every single second of it!

    Thanks to both you girls for posting this! I am getting ready to go on a mini-vacation and I am so, so, nervous about getting off track with my eating/weight loss. The tips were great and easy to do. I especially liked the last one… I certainly don’t want to ruin my vacation by being too worried about what I’m eating!

    Our vacations usually involve a lot of outdoor activities and cooking for ourselves, and those vacations don’t cause much weight gain. It’s the ones that have a lot of restaurant meals that are a problem for weight maintenance. I’d think a cruise would be a real challenge- it’s so hard to avoid overeating in an open buffet situation, especially when there’s also drink to lessen your willpower.

      I definitely overate on the cruise, but I also enjoyed every second. And we worked out several days, plus we walked/biked a ton. So even though I probably gained like a pound, things balanced out fairly well! :)
