Addie at 10 (almost 11) weeks: The Good, the bad, and the adorable.

We’ve had quite an eventful week around here!

The Good:

- Grandma GiGi was in town, and Addie had a great time hanging out with her and her puppy, Sophie.

Sophie always wanted to be near Addie, but she was good about not getting too close.  She would also get visibly upset when Addie was crying.  Too funny.

- I mentioned last week that I had to start supplementing with formula because Addie hadn’t gained enough weight.  Well we went back to the pediatrician’s office this week, and Addie had gained almost a full pound!!  She gained 15 ounces in 1 week.  The doctor was very happy with her progress.

10 weeks-150010 weeks 2-1500

- Her nighttime sleeping has been ah-mazing.  For the past week, she has slept from 8:00 pm – 7:00 am.  11 hours.  In a row.  This mommy is over the moon with happiness! (And I still credit moms on call for her good sleeping.  Seriously, check out their book.)

- She has been giving us consistently more eye contact and smiles now.  Her smiles make my day!

The Bad:

- Brandon was out of town all week for work.  This isn’t exactly “bad,” but it was hard to have him gone for so long.  We missed him!

- It appears that my milk supply is dwindling.  Now that we’re supplementing, I think Addie is getting “lazy” when it comes to breastfeeding.  It must be easier for her to just wait until she gets the bottle.  So now I’m not producing enough milk.  For the past several days, I’ve tried pumping multiple times a day, for 20 minutes each session … in the hopes of increasing my supply.  So far, nothing has changed.  And it’s a lot of work.  I’m frustrated and discouraged.  I want to keep breastfeeding, but I just don’t know if it’s going to happen.  I’ve already done a ton of online researching and probably seen every tip in the book, but if you have any personal advice, I’d welcome it!

The Adorable:

- Addie laughs when I stick my tongue out at her.  And she sometimes tries to imitate me.  Hopefully I’ll get this on camera at some point!

- She likes hanging out with her ‘friends.’

- She still loves her bath time.

- She has the longest eyelashes in the world. Red heart

OK, enough of me getting all ooey-gooey about my daughter. Winking smile

Now tell me what’s new with YOU!

Question for ya …

What did you do this weekend?

Anyone have any fun summer vacation plans?  Let me live vicariously through you!

Who’s watching Big Brother??

(I’m embarrassed at how excited I am that this show is back on!)

Those smile pictures are the cutest! My summer has mainly revolved around trying to find a house here in Houston…no luck yet:P We’re visiting my sister in Louisiana over the fourth and what I’m really excited about is our trip to Europe that is happening in September! I’ve already warned my husband about your trip and Addie’s connection to it;)

      Thanks, Heather! :)

  3. Avery @ YoungAspirations

Adorable is an understatement! Sorry to hear about your milk supply! Definitely hoping that gets better, but either way the Lord will sustain her whatever way is best :) Would die to see a video of Addie sticking her tongue out – too much! Glad you got your hubby back, I really hate when Dustin has to leave!

I know, it’s always such a bummer when the hubby is out of town!

Such a cutie!! I don’t watch Big Brother but did you see the new coming attractions for “Naked and Afraid” where they drop off a couple in the African wilderness?!?? Do we need to see people running around naked as entertainment now?

Um no! I haven’t seen that yet. Goodness. As much as I love some of my reality shows, it is ridiculous how they will turn ANYTHING into a reality show!

      • Lauren

And in the commercial they show their bums! I said to my husband “can’t they blur that out”. To which I received “if they blur everything out you will be watching two blurred dots walking around”. Well bad idea for a reality show then!

We supplemented too. Not because he wasn’t gaining enough weight, but because at the end of the day he would nurse and nurse and nurse and STILL be hungry! We started with adding just 2 ounces after nursing at bedtime. Suddenly there was sleep!

Beyond that, we’ve increased it over time, and now that he’s 7 months and eating solids, he’s almost completely weened. I know moms that nurse less or longer, but that seems to be what’s working for us.

As for advice for your supply: Traditional Medicinals Mother’s Milk tea WORKS!!! WORKS! Also, eating oatmeal can help boost your supply.

As for laziness on nursing, yes, that’s common. What I did was limit the supplementation to certain meals for the day. So he learned that “at this feeding, I’m only getting the breast — I’d better make the most of it!” I don’t know what your pediatrician recommended, but you could try that. What I also did was try to make sure the nipple size was smaller than my baby’s actual age — for example, when he was 3 months, I still used the 0+ size nipple. So he had to work harder for the milk. My hope was that it would be no easier than getting it from me. It seemed to work for a while, anyway! He looked really tired after a bottle, like “wow, that was hard work. Where’s the boob?”

Also, something to keep in mind, is that the muscle movements used for regular bottle nipples are different than the breast (I’m sure you know this) — the “breast nursing” muscles could be getting tired if not getting enough of a work out because the “bottle feeding” muscles are getting more work. I used Avent natural, which is closer to nursing in terms of what the baby has to do with his mouth (and wasn’t too outrageously expensive compared to some others). The whole bit about the muscles getting tired is my own person thought, I have no idea on the scientific community’s idea on that.

Your daughter is darling! And so tiny — my baby is such a tank! Your title was absolutely right — she’s adorable! :)

I always love your thoughts/advice. :) Thanks so much for taking the time to write all of that out. I just bought some of the fenugreek supplements today … I’m hoping that might help a little!

      • AineMistig

You’re so welcome! I’m glad you found them useful.

Also, I’ve been toying with the idea of starting a blog for a while. Maybe you could email me and give me some pointers on starting one?

        • notsodomesticated

Pointer #1 would be to use wordpress for your blog. I found it to be pretty user friendly. If you facebook with me with some other questions, I’ll try to answer them as best as I can!! :)

  7. Michelle @ Nice Lil Saturday

What a cutie; and just look at those lashes! I will have to check out your recommendation for getting babies to sleep through the night; I’m having a rough time with sleep and I haven’t even delivered my little guy yet!

Since travel has been nixed from the agenda due to my growing bump we are having lots of relatives come into town to visit and help us out with the nursery.

  10. Kristy

I ended up exclusive pumping for my lazy nurser, after almost 4 months of struggling. It sucks, and sometimes i feel rejected (silly, i know), but i also know she is getting the best nutrition. So dont beat yourself up if BF doesnt work long term

    • notsodomesticated

I understand your feelings … I have a lot of emotions about the whole subject! Thanks for your input. I appreciate it!

  11. Elle

I also recommend trying fenugreek, and a smaller nipple opening for the bottle. You might look into a hospital grade pump for increasing supply, if that’s really important to you. In the bigger picture, in a year or two how you fed her the first year won’t be salient (not as salient as it is now, for sure!) and NO ONE asks, compares, cares, etc. once she’s a toddler.

    • notsodomesticated

Thank you so much for that comment, Elle! We just got new bottles yesterday that appear to be harder for her to get milk out of … maybe that will help!! :)

  12. Loretta

I’m totally loving the pictures and updates! Thank you so much for taking time to write your blog…It’s the highlight of my day!

She inherited those eyelashes from GiGi who always had the most beautiful lashes from day 1.

Aww thank you, Aunt Loretta! I so wish you lived closer so you could meet her!!

  15. Leslie

Yay for almost a full pound in a week, that is amazing. Great work, mama! Isn’t that the best feeling when they gain well after a small set-back? We felt so triumphant when that happened for us. :) Curious what bottles you’re using? We love our Dr. Brown’s bottles! I notice that our Addison, after being supplemented, would get lazy on the nipple too so we started really spacing out her feedings so she is HUNGRY when she comes to the breast but it’s a fine line to tread because you want to make sure they aren’t cranky hungry. I think right now we’re at 7 feedings a day (she is 9.5 weeks). How frequently are you feeding? I find that a nipple shield helps, too.

In regards to milk supply, just think happy thoughts!! Your body is regulating itself but if for whatever reason you stop, do NOT beat yourself up. I think breast milk is best, yes, but if you are stressed and not enjoying motherhood because you’re pumping all the time or breastfeeding with no success or a sleepy/lazy baby, I think it’s best for the mom, the baby, and the family as a whole to keep everyone happy! It’s so much easier said than done, but try not to stress, you are an amazing mama!!

Aww thank you so much, Leslie! She’s typically only feeding 5 times a day now. But she gets about 5-6 oz per feeding (when I’m bottle feeding her). I think the fact that she’s sleeping through the night is probably part of my issue. But I can’t complain about that part haha!

  16. Kathy

Yay for the weight gain! I’m worried about how my milk supply is going to be affected by my return to work so you’re not alone in your struggle. Hope you are able to find a solution you feel at peace with.

That’s SO great about her weight!! Yay Addie :D
I love her smile, so beautiful!!
And I bought that book- the Moms on Call for the 6+ months- it was really good! Similar to other books that I had read, but it honestly just made me feel better about letting her cry. I don’t know what it was about their writing style, but it was so comforting. (if that makes sense)
    Thanks again for the suggestion!!

Oh good! I’m glad you found it to be helpful. You know, I keep being hesitant to follow their directions, but when I do … they are ALWAYS right! Everything they have said has been right on point so far. And I keep doing google searches about them to see if there’s any bad reviews, but everything I read is all positive! So even though it’s so hard for me to listen to her cry, I am trusting that they know what they’re talking about! ;)

Oh I love Big Brother!! Who are you rooting for this year? I adore Mccrae! :)

    • notsodomesticated

I’m not sure who I’m rooting for yet! I actually like Amanda right now because I think she’s funny. I did like Aaryn, but not anymore!!!

      • Cait

yep Amanda is very funny! I’m definitely not an Aaryn fan either!

  19. amy @ fearless homemaker

Well that’s great, too! Are you breastfeeding? Bottle? Both?

  20. Mary@FitandFed

Have you thought about using a Lact-aid supplementer? Then the supplemental formula will not interfere with nursing. I’m worried that the long length of time without nursing overnight may be impacting your milk supply and her weight gain, too. I would wake her up to nurse at least once during that long sleep time at least until your milk supply improves. I’m not sure how long she slept at once before now but 11 hours is way too long for her age. Relaxed skin-to-skin time could help stimulate your supply and her interest, too, for example lying down together and nursing her to sleep at nap time or spending time together at night. I know the trend is toward encouraging really early independent sleeping in the advice books these days, but for nursing, more time together really helps. Experience: I was a midwife and also nursed my three children into toddlerhood.
