17 Weeks: Working out during the 2nd trimester.

Happy Monday! Smile

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  We spent Saturday watching college football with friends and eating completely unhealthy (but completely delicious) game day foods (including Buffalo Chicken Dip … yum!)

(P.S. If you mention the Gator game to me, we might not be friends anymore.  Just kidding.  Kind of.)

And now, for a pregnancy update!

17 weeks

Believe it or not, I’m already at 17 weeks.  I can’t believe that in 3 weeks, I will be half way through this pregnancy.  Unbelievable.

Symptoms: I’ve still been having headaches, but not as often.  And then on Friday, out of blue, I started having pain in my … ahem … left “cheek,” if you will (and no, I’m not talking about my face). Who me?

I did a Google search, and it looks like it’s most likely “posterior pelvic pain” or “pelvic girdle pain” (it sounds a lot funnier than it feels).  I had some friends mention that a chiropractor could help, but it’s nothing major right now, so I’m just hoping it will go away with a little exercise and stretching!

Weight gained: My bump is still pretty small, but I’ve given up hiding it.  It seems like I’m gaining right around a pound a week, which is supposedly the norm.

I’m still able to fit into most of my pants, with the help of a “Bellaband.”  It’s a piece of material that allows me to unbutton my pants but still keep them firmly in place.  Genius.

Food cravings/aversions: No aversions right now, thank goodness!

But after seeing several Pinterest pictures of fried pickles last week, I decided I needed to try them for myself.

friedpickles2

(Not my pic, because I forgot my camera.  Picture courtesy of this source via Google images.)

After church on Sunday, we went to Smash Burger, and I tried fried pickles for the first time in my life.

I have no idea why it’s taken me so long to try fried pickles.  As a pickle-enthusiast (yes, that’s right), I am shocked that it has taken me 29 years to eat a fried pickle.

I am happy to say that they did not disappoint.  They were a bit heavy (as most fried foods are), but they were salty and briny (is that a word?) and even better dipped in buttermilk ranch dressing.  Yum. Red heart

Fun events: Nothing much this week, but in three short weeks, we get to find out the baby’s gender!!  Start sharing your guesses now! Winking smile

———

I’ve been meaning to talk about pregnancy and working out for a while now.

011-1500

Here’s my thoughts in a nut shell: It ain’t always pretty.

First of all, running is no longer comfortable for me.  Things move that didn’t use to move.  Clothing rides up.  It’s just … trickier.

I also get out of breath much easier.  The books say this is normal, but it’s still an odd feeling, to get winded walking up a short flight of stairs.

Also, I’m just going to be honest.  Out of all of the clothing I own, my work out clothes currently make me feel the worst.  They just cut in such a way that makes me feel like a stuffed sausage.  I’m not trying to complain, but I like to keep it real with you guys.

025-1500

I know what you’re going to say … go out and buy new clothes.  Well, I did that.  6 weeks ago.  And guess what?  Now none of it fits. Smile with tongue out  And I’m too cheap to keep buying more clothes!

But I have found that Brandon’s t-shirts are quite comfortable workout attire.  I don’t know how thrilled he is with my new solution, but he’s smart enough to keep away from this topic.

My new game plan is to walk around my neighborhood once a day.  It only takes 20 minutes, but I figure doing that walk 6-7 times a week is pretty good.  I’m also trying to be better about weight lifting.  My doctor said it is completely fine to lift weights, as long as I don’t lay on my stomach while doing so.  And I know that the stronger I am, the easier my pregnancy, delivery, and recovery will be.  But I’m not a fan of weight lifting, so I’m not always as consistent as I should be!

So that’s my latest pregnancy recap!  As always, thank you for your continued prayers and support.  Brandon and I appreciate them more than words can say!!

And finally, if any of my friends out there battle with anxiety or fear (I’m right there with you!), I would strongly, strongly encourage you to take some time and watch this video:

I promise it won’t be a waste of your time.  And if you like that one, go check out the website again on Wednesday, because another powerful message with be posted.

Have a wonderful day, my friends!

Question for ya …

What did you do this weekend?

Ever tried fried pickles?  Fan or foe?

If you are or have been pregnant before, what type of workouts did you do?

Any current food cravings?

Yay! I see a little bump! You look adorable. And my goodness, I can relate to everything you’re saying here SO well! I think I was nodding my head as I read each sentence. I guess that makes sense since we’re pregnant twins, right?! ;) My workouts have been a lot of walking lately. I’ve tried to make them a little more challenging with some incline and adjusting the speeds occasionally, but other times it’s just a walk around the neighborhood which is fine by me too. I’ve also been doing a lot more yoga which has surprisingly made me sore at times.

I need to try out some more yoga. I’m sure that would be good for me right now!

Look at that bump! :) so so cute! I can’t believe you are already 17 weeks, crazy!
Even though I am not pregnant, nor have ever been, I can totally relate to work out clothes sometimes being the least favorite outfits to put on when feeling a little, ahem, heavy. Shorts with tight elastic waistbands and sports tops with built in bras that cut off circulation are not always flattering on bloated days. I always buy my work out attire a size larger now because elastic is just much more comfortable for me when it is loose lol!

I completely agree. The tight elastic waistbands are killing me!

yay, i see the bump! =) and i’m so happy you finally discovered fried pickles – as a pickle lover, they’re always a fun treat. and how delish is smashburger?! we just got them in TN a few months ago + i loved the meal we got there!

    • notsodomesticated

I was really surprised at how much I liked Smash Burger! I got their BBQ burger with bacon and onion straws, and it was quite delicious!

For being a ‘fast casual’ restaurant, I thought it was really good. My burger was flavorful and juicy, and the fried pickles were really yummy! :)

  6. kaceyt

Fried pickles dipped in ranch are a must at SmashBurger! In fact, maybe I need to try my hand at making some. I have a huge jar of pickles at home that I don’t really intend on eating plain…thanks for idea!

  7. Maura @ My Healthy 'Ohana

I developed really painful sciatica during my first pregnancy (on my left side), and so was on the lookout for it with my second. I started doing yoga and stretches and it totally helped! Yoga was definitely the mainstay of my exercise during the second and third trimesters, that and walking :) You’re looking great!!

Eeeee!!! Every pregnancy post gets me more and more excited! I’m gonna go ahead and vote that I think it’s going to be a girl.

No reason, just a feeling ;)

And don’t worry, I won’t mind if you name her Brittany haha ;)

  9. Avery @ YoungAspirations

You have the cutest little bump! That is so crazy. I feel like you just announced on the blog you were pregnant and now you’re already finding out the sex in two weeks. Time is flying! I’m not pregnant (but I am often just lazy) but walking has been a life saver for me not being a member at any gym right now. Especially if you have a way to track your distance, walking can still be an excellent workout. Sometimes during walks I’ll stop every 5 minutes or so and do 10 lunges, then keep walking. It takes my walk up a notch and I get a little bit more of a leg workout too! :) I think walking this time of year is awesome too, since it’s just cooling down and you can kind of stop and enjoy the season.. harder to do on a run!

Believe it or not, lunges are one of the few things my doctor said I can’t do anymore, while I’m pregnant! Something about my center of gravity being off … I guess he’s worried I’ll fall over. And knowing me, I can’t say I blame him for having that concern! Haha! :)

  10. Austin

My mother-in-law visited us this weekend. We spent most of our time just hanging out at home. On Sunday we went to church, then to the farmer’s market and had organic ice cream from a local shop. It was nice.

I’ve never heard of fried pickles before! They sound good though!

When I was pregnant I did stretching and barre exercises in the spare moments that I was just standing around. I also did “Summer Sanders’ Prenatal Workout” DVD and really enjoyed it!

No food cravings; I guess I’ve been getting everything I need.

I went to Smash Burger for the first time this weekend! Crazy. I was visiting a friend in San Diego. I saw he fried pickles but didn’t try them. I got the rosemary fries instead and they were pretty good.
I think your plan for exercise is pretty good. Staying active is what’s most important right? And I hear you on workout clothes not always being the most comfortable or “cutting”. Since I am larger anyway I almost always feel self conscious and uncomfortable in workout clothes. It stinks!!

Look at how cute you are!! Im glad to hear you are doing well so far. I think your plan for workouts is great. I know when I get prego (if I ever do) that walking, weight lifting, and yoga will probably be my go to workouts. Although going 9 months without soccer might just drive me crazy!

Girl, you look ADORABLE pregnant! I feel like a stuffed sausage in my workout clothes right now, but I’m not pregnant….time to hit the weights harder and up that cardio I guess haha. I LOVE fried pickles – my sister in law and I will sometimes have a night with too much wine/beer and lots of fried pickles!

I so absolutely think you are having a boy. Yes, ma’am. It’s a boy. I have had fried pickles before, of course, and I’m with you…they are pretty heavy. But still super good! Your little bump looks so cute, and I can’t believe you are half way done already! Where does the time go?!? I’ve only been pregnant once, and while I was pregnant I walked every night. It makes you feel better, so I think your game plan is a good one!

Haha I love that you think it’s a boy, because most people keep saying they think it’s a girl!! ;) Only a couple more weeks to find out!

  16. Lauren

Baby Bump time! I go to a wonderful chiropractor (very holistic type) and she is always adjusting pregnant patients.
I go every 2 weeks in my normal life (not pregnant) and it makes a world of difference.

  17. jennifer

    You look great!!
I think fried pickles sound amazing! I must try those sometime.
And working out…I ran a lot while I was pregnant with our first child, til about 28 weeks. I felt like an elephant but was so afraid to stop running for fear I’d never start again after having the baby. At that point my doc, who was a runner herself (and mother of five!!!) said that there may come a point when running is not enjoyable or beneficial. I decided I’d reached that point and I stopped til after I had the baby.

While I was pregnant with our second baby, I ran far less b/c I had more discomfort much earlier. I was so afraid I wouldn’t be able to start again, but I actually have a better 5k and 10k time since having baby #2! So don’t worry and just listen to your body.

Thank you so much for your thoughts on running, Jennifer. I am worried that it will be hard for me to start back up … and honestly, it probably will be. But I started running for the first time just a year and a half ago. I started from scratch then, and I can do it again after the baby! ;)
